01

Built in three blues

The blue jay is one of the most recognized songbirds in North America, named for the blue that defines it. The card builds the bird in three shades of blue, edged with black at the beak and wing, and lifted with white at the chest and crown. Real blue jay feathers refract light, not pigment, which is why the layered quilling reads as depth, not just color. The branch is hand-coiled brown, finished with leaves in two greens to mark the play of light through canopy.

The bird body alone is built from over thirty quilled coils in three blues, black, and white. The white chest, the crown's tuft, and the wing's dark inner edges are set as separate pieces before the bird is positioned on the branch.

02

For the quiet watcher.

For the parent, grandparent, or friend who knows which bird visits the feeder first each morning. A handmade bird greeting card belongs in the same room as the binoculars and the field guide, kept on the shelf rather than tucked in a drawer. It fits birthday, retirement, get well, and sympathy gifting; a blue jay is also a long-held symbol of a departed loved one returning, in some North American traditions.

Bird lovers often frame these cards as small wall art near the window where the actual birds visit. The card is sized 5x5 inches to fit standard frames sold at most US home stores.
